Commercial Success At Major Mainland Fatstock Shows

Local Commercial cattle breeders are once again toasting success after stock bred in the Province has excelled in the stiffest of competitions on the mainland.

The Scottish Winter Fair held annually at the Highland Showgrounds attracts thousands of visitors each year keen to see the very best livestock compete for Championship titles. In the beef cattle rings judging was in the capable hands of Wendy Hunter who has enjoyed tremendous success showing with her father Bert Paton.

The Reserve Supreme Female Championship was awarded to Ewan McPherson & Sons, Oban with their superb British Blonde heifer. This outstanding entry was bred by Stephen & Keith Williamson, Benburb and enjoyed great success at local shows in the Province this summer before being spied by the McPherson family.

"Golden Delicious" bred by James Alexander, Randalstown was Reserve Lightweight Steer Champion at the Scottish Winter Fair for the same exhibitors.

There was more accolade for NI Commercial producers at the legendary "Smithfield" which was staged recently at the East of England Showgrounds, Peterborough.

Reserve Supreme Male was "Rockafella" who was again exhibited by the well known McPherson family. This stylish Limousin steer was bred at Jalex by James Alexander.

There were five cattle in total bred by Jalex at Smithfield, all of which were placed in strong classes and included one first and two second prize tickets.

Sean O'Kane, Dunloy was behind the well made Limousin heifer "Secret Obsession" which was awarded Reserve Supreme Female Champion for welsh showman Afron Owens.

The success story didn't end there for local breeders and exhibitors with the father and son team of Dermot and Gareth Small, Kilkeel bringing out a great team of stock to both events. They scooped the Reserve Purebred Female Championship with their super Charolais heifer "Buckfast" on her first show outing at Smithfield.

This duo also chalked up a red ticket with their home bred steer calf which later sold at auction for the top price in this section of £2200.

August 2011: Farlow Has Leading Lady At Heifer Championships.

Report by Libby Clarke Photos by Alfie Shaw

The Ulster Bank Breeding Heifer Championship has become one of the most hotly contended competitions in the NI Commercial Cattle Exhibitor Club's diary. This year proved no exception with Club members keen to qualify their choice females at local shows throughout the summer. This resulted in a breathtaking string of heifers going head to head in the final which was held recently at Balmoral Show Grounds.

Donegal based suckler producer Pearce McNamee had the task of selecting the 2011 Champion from the first class entry, choosing a home bred British Blonde heifer from Alan Farlow as his leading lady. "Hillview Peppa" was one of the first to qualify for this championship have earned her stripes for inclusion in the final at Balmoral Show in May.

Alan Farlow was delighted with his win, which follows on from Commercial Championships at Ballymoney and Limavady Shows this year in addition to the British Blonde award at the recent Summer Spectacular. "We thought we had something special in this heifer as soon as she hit the ground, and she hasn't put a foot wrong since. " stated Alan following on from his win. Ann Calwell was on hand to add her congratulations to Alan on behalf of sponsors Ulster Bank. "This has turned into an exciting competition and adds a twist to the commercial classes that are staged at local shows during the summer. The Ulster Bank are delighted to run this event in partnership with the NI Commercial Club, and have enjoyed watching it gain momentum year on year."

Knocking on the door in reserve position was the mighty Mas Du Clo daughter from well known Beragh farmers John McSorley & Sons. There was plenty of power and potential in this Limousin heifer which was bred on the farm from a lim x blue type cow. The McSorley family are never far from the headlines with their cattle, and there has been great interest in this heifer since making her debut at Balmoral Show.

Quality continued down the line with Alan Veitch securing third place with his Doonally New daughter "Fancy Pants". This Charolais heifer is a full sister to the 2011 Calf Champion shown from the Veitch team, and is out of a blue cow.

Club Chairman Ben Sinnamon collected the fourth prize award with his Corrie Alan daughter bred on their Pomeroy farm.

Newtownards farmer and butcher Gareth Corrie was next in line with his Blonde heifer which also won the reserve breed championship at the Summer Spectacular.

Justin Mallon, Ardboe brought out the final heifer to secure a ticket in the final line up. This beautifully marked roan heifer should be a real cow maker.

This completed the results card for the 2011 final with judge Pearce McNamee delighted with the standard put in front of him. "The quality that made it through to this final was of the highest calibre, with all of the qualifiers showing great potential.I thought the champion heifer stood out a mile as soon as I saw her in the ring, offering plenty of power and breediness that are essential for the ideal suckler cow".

Nigel Cochrane, committee member made a presentation to Pearce on behalf of the Club and thanked him for his assistance on the day.

A special mention was made to highlight the support from the Ulster Bank. Ann Calwell and Cormac McKervey are familiar faces around the commercial rings throughout the year, and it is hoped that this is an alliance that will continue for many years.

Red Ruby reigns supreme  at Balmoral Show

By Julie Hazelton

A very sweet and correct heifer with impressive hindquarters and super locomotion was how Scottish judge, Terry Coghill from Orkney, described the commercial beef champion at Balmoral Show.

Claiming the hotly contested overall championship award was the lightweight heifer class winner, Red Ruby, owned jointly by beef and sheep farmer, Alister Crawford, and livestock auctioneer, Richard Beattie, Newtownstewart, County Tyrone.

This eye-catching 470 kilo Limousin heifer, bred from a British Blue cross Limousin cow, was purchased after winning the calf championship at Allam’s Christmas fatstock show and sale last year. Alister Crawford and Richard Beattie have been showing commercial beef cattle for 18 years, and they were delighted to scoop their first-ever championship title.

Judge, Terry Coghill, who runs 100 commercial suckler cows alongside herds of pedigree Limousin and Charolais cattle, awarded the reserve championship honours to Vanilla Ice, an eight-month-old heifer shown by John Killen, and daughters, Shauna and Katrina from Crossgar, County Down.

This second prize winning home-bred heifer came from the same class as the overall champion. “Both heifers were very well presented. The reserve champion is a very similar beast to the champion, and I’m sure they’ll be competing against one another throughout the show season,” added Mr Coghill.

The Killen trio are no strangers to success in the Balmoral showring, having won five reserve championships and one supreme award in six years at the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society’s annual show.

Weighing 450 kilos, Vanilla Ice, was bred from a British Blue cross Limousin dam, and sired by the 2009 Balmoral Show Limousin champion, Guards Boomer .

The heavyweight heifer class was won by a yearling cross-bred Limousin heifer shown by John McSorley and sons, Beragh, County Tyrone.

Top honours in the lightweight steer class went to the much-admired Gumy Bear, an Allanfauld Super Scot son (Charolais), exhibited by Jack Smyth from Bessiebell Farms, Newtownstewart.  Jack is one of the youngest exhibitors in the NI Commercial Cattle Exhibitors’ Club, and also breeds pedigree Aberdeen Angus and Charolais cattle. This bullock was purchased after winning the calf championship at Newtownstewart fatstock show – an event judged by Jack Smyth’s father, Stephen.

Claiming the red ribbons in the heavyweight steer class was Super Trouper, a 700 kilo bullock brought out by joint owners, Robert Simpson, Aughnacloy, and James Alexander, Randalstown. This one was sired by the Limousin bull, Shire Apollo, and bred from a cross-bred Limousin dam.

Balmoral was the first qualifying show for the 2011 Ulster Bank Breeding Heifer Championship. The two qualifiers were Ballygreenan Classy Lassy , a cross-bred Limousin heifer owned by Louise Breen, Augher; and the home-bred Hillview Peppa, a British Blonde cross heifer owned by Alan Farlow, Garvagh.

Results from the judging ring include:

Lightweight beef heifer, showing no permanent teeth – 1, Alistair Crawford and Richard Beattie, Newtownstewart; 2, John Killen, Crossgar; 3, Louise Breen, Augher.

Heavyweight beef heifer, showing no permanent teeth – 1, John McSorley and Sons, Beragh; 2, Sean O’Brien, Lifford, County Donegal; 3, Alan Farlow, Garvagh.

Lightweight beef steer, showing no permanent teeth – 1, Jack Smyth, Newtownstewart; 2, Louise Breen; 3, Andrew Rea, Straid, Ballyclare.
